Battersea Old Windsor is urging people to open their hearts and homes to Greyhounds looking for a permanent place to call their own.
The leading animal rescue charity is shining a light on why Greyhounds make great canine companions and are putting to bed some common myths about the breed.
Battersea Old Windsor centre manager Kaye Mughal said: “Often Greyhounds can be overlooked in favour of other breeds, but they give just as much love as other canines and make for life-long loyal and fun-loving companions”.
The centre currently has six Greyhounds in its care looking for forever homes all of whom have now been in the charity’s care over twice the length of the average time taken to rehome a Battersea rescue dog (35 days).
“Currently in our care we have some lovely Greyhounds looking for their forever homes, including Jolene and Blake who have been in our care for over 160 days.
"Jolene is a sweet Greyhound who is looking for new owners who can offer her a quiet home where she can snooze, play and let her confidence grow.
"Blake is a charming boy who has won plenty of admirers and is now looking for a new home where he can rest his paws on a comfy sofa.
"Here at Battersea, we go all in for all for the rescue animals like Jolene and Blake wherever they are and however they need us to help them get a second chance in life and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that they can find new homes soon”.
Speaking about some common misconceptions on the breed, Kaye added: “Because of their speedy nature, people often think that Greyhounds need lots more exercise than your average dog, but most Greyhounds will stay happy and healthy with short walks.
"They may have brief bursts of energy called ‘zoomies’ where they run around for a short time, but ultimately many are real couch potatoes at heart and love nothing than a good snooze. Most greyhounds really are at their happiest chilling on a sofa and lounging with their favourite people”.
Kaye also described how greyhounds can also be very affectionate dogs as well, and many have a cute quirk where they will lean into you for a fuss and a stroke.
Greyhounds also require very little grooming as their short sleek coats take care of themselves and will only need the occasional brush.
Jolene – Four-years-old
This brown-eyed girl’s beauty is beyond compare and she’s begging for you to please give her a home!
She’s a gentle soul who loves a fuss and will be your best friend if you’ve got a treat in your hand.
This sweet girl is looking for kind-hearted owners living in a peaceful setting away from any hustle and bustle to help build her confidence and get her used to the sights, sounds and smells of the outside world.
Blake – Three-years-old
Since spending time in the care of a dedicated Battersea foster carer, Blake has won plenty of admirers and this charming man is now looking for a permanent place to rest his paws.
He’s happiest snoozing on his favourite comfy sofa and could live with a like-minded sighthound that he could build a special bond with.
Casper - Four-years-old
Casper the friendly Greyhound is much more of a fan of his people pals than other dogs and would need to be the only pet in an adult-only home with owners who have the time to help get this sweet boy comfortable in new surroundings.
Once he’s settled in, his affectionate ways will shine through as he loves nothing more than a good fuss and a stroke.
Heart & Poppet - 5-years-old/ 4 years-old
This adorable doggy duo thrive in each other's company and since coming into the centre together, staff have really seen their friendship grow.
Heart is the more adventurous of the two and is always happy to meet to meet new people, whilst Poppet is a little more laid back preferring to chill out on a comfy bed.
Their favourite thing to do is to go on calming walks with each other and they are now looking for new owners to offer these besties a new home together.
Manny - Three-years-old
This cheeky boy has a sweet face that is hard to resist, and he is known by staff to pop his head into your lap when he’s in the mood for a fuss.
He’s looking for new owners who can nurture his caring ways and play with him when he’s up for letting out the cheekier side of his personality.
Manny would need to be the only pet in the home so he can get all the love and attention of his new owners to himself.
