Berkshire supermarkets have joined those nationwide affected by the card payment issues for Visa Debit Cards and Mastercard card users.

Shoppers hit out on social media that they were forced to use cash when paying for their shopping in Sainsbury’s and Home Bargains.

One shopper in the Calcot area, made customers aware that Sainsbury’s wasn’t allowing card payments.

According to shoppers at Home Bargains in Newbury there is staff on the door to let you know it's cash-only for the for-seeable future.

One Sainsbury's shopper said: "Feel sorry for the staff at Sainsburys, they are getting a lot of stick and it’s not their fault. Be kind."

It soon became clear that other super brands were also affected by this issue across the UK.

Visa issued a statement saying: "We are aware that some cardholders are experiencing issues when making payments. While Visa’s systems are operating normally, we are working with our partners to investigate.”

Both Asda and Sainsbury's were aware of the issues, replying to posts on X apologising to customers for the inconvenience caused.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson on X commented: "I'm sorry about the card payment issue in store.

"We've been made aware there was a nationwide issue with card payments earlier today.

"We've been advised the issue has now been resolved. We're sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused."

While an Asda spokesperson added: "We are aware of the issue that is going on and we are working hard to get this fixed as soon as possible.

"I apologise for any inconvenience this has caused."

Asda has since confirmed, according to Sky News, its payment systems are back up and running following temporary issues with Visa.
