Tonight we all saw what we never wanted to witness.
After weeks of build up and excitement, England lost the Euros final to Spain after a nail-biting 94 minutes of football.
In what has been England men’s biggest match on foreign soil, the nation had high hopes for the outcome of tonight’s game with choruses of “it’s coming home” ringing out across Reading in the lead up to the game.
But it all ended in heartache after the Spanish side scored its second goal in the 84th minute.
The Chronicle watched the whole game unfold from Blue Collar Corner where dozens of fans had gathered.
George Blundell from Maidenhead said “I’m very disappointed but I am hopeful that we will come back better next time.
”But right now, I’m depressed.”
The mood is low but at the same time England fans had a great night and are celebrating either way.
Eimear Cunningham said “I’m sad but I feel that England played well.
”Well done to our boys. You did amazingly and I’m so proud of you.”
The hoards of people at Blue Collar Corner cheered on the team throughout the whole tournament finals.
Although the result was eventually what we all did not want, our boys played amazingly.
Antonia Smith said “I’m too heartbroken. I went through a break up this year and this feels worse.
”This has felt so bad I cannot believe it.”
The crowds have started to leave from the popular food market.
Henry Middleton said “It’s the best performance I have seen this tournament but unfortunately it was nowhere near enough.”
Ed Westley said “It was decent from the England lads but we could not defend to save our lives. It was such a shame.
”We are all feeling it right now sadly.”
The England team put up a very good fight but sadly it was not enough.
Joseph Blundell said “England showed a lot of fight but defensively we made the same mistakes we saw in the last five years.
”We were yet to find a system that allowed out star players to flourish.
”The support was excellent. And we will all cheer the boys on in the world cup.”
The vibe in Blue Collar is particularly sombre this evening as fans wave the chance of a win in this Euros tournament goodbye.
Dan Hubbard said “Ultimately I am very disappointed. I can’t fault the boys, and I have given Gareth a lot of stick over the years.
”He’s been defensive when we’ve had the opportunity to play more forward but I think he gets it, and I think that’s important for England.
”He has fostered such a good spirit. For it to end it this way it is heartbreaking for us fans but he cares about the players so much.”
Mr Hubbard also said that at this stage it was clear that the players could pull through but it’s heartbreaking.
