A Tilehurst post office has been cordoned off by police following a suspected robbery in the early hours of this morning.
On Wednesday, July 24, officers were spotted at the shop on School Road where the glass door to the post office was smashed. A scattering of glass around the entrance can also be seen alongside a large rock on the pavement.
Residents and nearby shopkeepers voiced their outrage at the incident, which is the third to happen within the town in the last year.
Richard Kemp, the owner of Tilehurst locksmiths opposite the scene said: “It’s quite a shock. You don’t expect something like this to happen in a quiet village like Tilehurst.
“For some reason that shop just keeps getting targeted and there is no rhyme or reason to it. It’s unsettling because this didn’t use to happen in the town.
“A lot of people seem to think it’s some kind of gang that come out every now and then and target the town.”
According to one employee in a nearby supermarket, the suspects allegedly made off with a variety of vapes after failing to break into the safe.
Post Office customers, who visited the shop this morning to send parcels were being redirected to the Co-op due to the closure.
This came as a disappointment to many residents who frequent to service regurally for different services.
Jay Lloyd, a manager from the Co-Op on School Road referred to the discontent that it has caused to the village.
He said: “It seems to be one of the only shops that is targeted in Tilehurst and I think that may be because there are no shutters and it is easy to break the glass doors.
“You would expect the shop next door would be easier to break into but because they have shutters, it makes it harder to get in.”
Due to the Co-Op’s temporary closure on the 31st July, a lot of their services have been halted until after the reopening.
This includes the parcel collection and post office services within the store.
Customers are being redirected to another store in the vicinity that provides parcel services.
The Chronicle have contacted Thames Valley Police for further details.
