Nearly £3,000 has been raised for a homeless charity in Reading after a well-attended cricket competition.
On July 14, the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh Reading Branch organised a highly successful charity cricket tournament to support New Beginnings Reading, a local charity dedicated to helping the homeless.
The event raised an impressive £2,950, which will be donated to the charity.
23 teams took part, including an inaugural women’s tournament with seven ladies' teams.
The event winners were Tilehurst Cricket Club for the men's category and Toophan Toli for the ladies category. Participants ranged in age from the youngest at five years old to the oldest at 62 years old, showcasing the inclusive spirit of the event.
Indian national cricket legend, Deep Dasgupta attended and praised the community spirit, stating: "It is wonderful to see the local community coming together to enjoy cricket and raise funds for a worthy cause."
The 37-year-old played for the national side 20 years ago, including knocking a century against England in a 2001 Test.
The coordinator of New Beginnings, Co-Chairperson, Sarah Bailey was also in attendance and expressed admiration for the entire tournament, especially noting the voluntary kitchen that sold Indian food and delicacies to raise additional funds on the day.
Over 350 people attended the event, contributing to a memorable day for participants and their families.
Surya, the local Sewa Co-ordinator for HSS Reading, commented: "This is the second year we have organised this tournament, and it is wonderful to see so much fun, participation, and time given by all to raise funds for such a worthy cause."
