Students at Bohunt Wokingham Secondary School joined staff at a housebuilding company to plant bulbs seeds and flowers in a ‘wonderful’ eco-friendly event this month.
11 children between the ages of 11 and 14 took part in Crest Nicholson’s bulb planting day on Wednesday, July 3, led by science teacher Dr Jo Tovey with equipment provided by the Surrey-based company.
Wokingham Mayor Adrian Mather was also in attendance at the Arborfield Green housing development in Reading and spoke to the students about his role and what it entails in the community.
He said: “I was so pleased to see so many Bohunt Wokingham students planting bulbs to improve their local environment. In addition, I was amazed by the understanding of the students. Their knowledge that what we do locally can affect our overall environment and that action needs to be taken to conserve and enhance our local and global environment was very pleasing.”
Arborfield Green was originally used as a Remount Depot in the early 1900s, supplying the military with horses for operational use – a history the students paid tribute to by planting a number of winter-flowering bulbs and poppy seeds at the site where the stables once stood.
One student described it as a “fantastic experience”, adding: “It was great to be planting somewhere we can make a difference and show how strongly we feel about eco issues. We are looking forward to seeing the bees enjoy the bulbs flowering in autumn!"
