According to recent figures, Reading Train Station was ranked ‘one of the worst’ stations in the UK.
Reading ranks as the 29th worst performing train station, over the four weeks – for passenger count and performance compared to all 2,628 stations, in the latest Ontimetrains data.
Despite this, passengers travelling to and from the central station have voiced their approval of the facilities, staff and train times compared to other nearby stations.
This echoes the fact that Reading Station is one of the top risers in the last 12 weeks, gaining 387 positions among over 2,000 stations across the country.
Reading Central Station sees 44,196 passengers travel through it on a daily basis with trains running to and from London.
The Chronicle spoke to commuters on a Monday morning who were travelling to Reading from towns and cities across the country.
SSE employee, Aaron Minter travels from Bramley a few times a week to the Reading-based headquarters.
He said: “The station isn’t too bad. It’s clean and very central to everything I need to get to in Reading. All the trains to and from Bramley seem to always be on time and it’s only a 20 minute journey.
“I will say however that when there are delays or cancellations where you need to change platforms there isn’t a lot of information. There was a time when I was running to another platform at the other end of the station because the one I was at had been cancelled.
“Compared to other stations such as Basingstoke, I will say that I am happy using it.”
Another commuter, who visits Reading twice a week to his office at Keyloop echoed Aarons' viewpoint saying that he has never had problems during his commute from Poole.
Tim Smith said that the facilities within the station – including the waiting room – could be updated.
According to frequent traveller and Reading resident, Dania, the staff at Reading Station are extremely helpful when she need help with tickets or anything within the station.
Dania added: “The station is very convenient, easy and all the trains that I use are always on time.”
With trains rolling through the station from all over the country, the Chronicle spoke to Reading resident, Debbie who was travelling to Scotland on a Monday morning.
She praised the staff and the train times during her time using the station.
