A driver has voiced their frustration over a weeks-long lane closure heading into Reading, with yet more disruption on the way in coming months.

One lane was shut was imposed along the A4 Bath Road going through Calcot heading east towards Reading, between its junction with Charrington Road and Old Bath Road.

It caused longer than usual journeys and stretched on for nine weeks, leading to driver complaints.

Brian Genery said: "It's been nine weeks now, with nothing being done for the last four weeks.

"It's only causing problems, especially at peak times and unnecessary pollution from the cars."

The closure was put in place by Southern Gas Networks (SGN) to make repairs to its network, with more work due along Bath Road.

A spokesperson for SGN said: "We’ve been working in Bath Road, Calcot to repair our gas network since late May.

"Due to gas readings in multiple locations, we needed to make several excavations to locate the source of the leaks.

"For everyone’s safety, a temporary lane closure was put in place while the gas was vented and to allow us to monitor the site regularly every day.

"We have now removed the lane closure while we continue to vent the ducts and monitor the site.

"We expect to return to the road at a later date to complete further repairs and will notify residents once plans for this have been finalised.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused to the local community and thank you for your patience and understanding."
