Readers are reacting with disappointment and surprise to the upcoming closure of L'Ortolan, a beloved local restaurant in Reading.

Known for its exquisite French cuisine and warm atmosphere, the restaurant has been a favourite for special events and nights out.

Patricia Taylor, a regular diner, praised the eatery as a place of "sublime" food and wine, complemented by a friendly and knowledgeable staff.

She said: "It’s a real pity it’s having to close and I wish them all the very best for their future careers."

However, not all patrons share the same fond memories.

Barry Aldridge was not as impressed, asserting, "Wasn’t very good, simple as that."

Meanwhile, Nicola Beard believed the dated decor was to blame for its downfall.

She said: "It was inevitable, everything about the layout and decor screams 70’s."

One issue that local diners now face is where to enjoy a high-quality meal after L'Ortolan's closure.

Pat Cowen bemoaned the lack of options left in Reading.

She said: "Where to go in the Reading area now for that very special meal?? Both Loch Fyne and Forburys have now closed.

"I honestly would not know where to book for a special occasion??"

To give the landmark restaurant a proper send-off, patrons are being encouraged to book one last meal and join the farewell of L'Ortolan.

"Let’s make our last moments together as special as the countless ones we’ve already cherished," the restaurant announced.

Serving the local community with passion and dedication for 38 years, L'Ortolan will be closing its doors for the final time on Saturday, August 31.

This marks an end to a culinary era in Reading, leaving its patrons with fond memories and exquisite tastes that they will undoubtedly miss.
