More roadworks are coming to an already busy road heading into Reading just as a controversial bus lane has gone live.

A bus lane going west towards the town centre in London Road is now in effect, between its junctions with Liverpool Road and Amity Road. The change was made after overnight works, with the bus lane going live on Thursday, August 15.

However, the repainting of road markings has not been completed due to weather conditions experienced the night beforehand.  There are currently no centre markings in London Road between Cholmeley Road and Cemetery Junction, so drivers have been asked to be careful.

Reading Borough Council's contractor plans to return on Monday, August 19, between 7pm-1am (weather permitting) to complete the road markings and conclude the works on London Road.

The bus lane proved controversial in discussions between councillors, as members of the Green opposition group have raised fears that it will cause delays, as one traffic lane has been taken away from regular road users.

Meanwhile, the council's Labour administration has argued that the change will speed up bus journeys for passengers going from East Reading, Woodley and Earley into the town centre.

The lane can be used by cyclists and motorbikes as well as buses.
