Measures are set to be taken to deter suspected street drinkers and loitering in a busy area of Reading town centre.

People can often be seen loitering and drinking alcohol outside the Metro Bank, which has been an observable issue for some time.

Authorities are aware of the issue, with a boss at the Broad Street Mall saying that measures will be installed to address any anti-social behaviour in the area.

Steven Connolly, the centre manager of Broad Street Mall said: "The ledge in question belongs to Metro Bank and we have been working with them and other town centre partners, to help resolve the situation.

"Shortly seating deterrence will be installed in the area that will aid in dispersing the groups that have congregated there."

Furthermore, Reading Borough Council is working with the police officers and other partners to tackle the issue as well.

A spokesperson said: "The council and the Business Improvement District (BID) work closely with Thames Valley Police on a range of issues to keep residents and visitors to Reading town centre safe.

"We would encourage any residents, or businesses, who witness any illegal activities to report these offences direct to police who have the power to address such issues.

"The council has reached out to Broad Street Mall and encouraged them to introduce target hardening measures to deter this activity.

"We will continue to work with the Police, the BID and local businesses on strategies to reduce problems caused by antisocial behaviour and alcohol consumption.
