Neighbours have expressed confusion and alarm over ongoing roadworks in Caversham.

Residents shared the news on the Caversham Gossip Facebook group, with some complaining that the works are 'causing chaos'.

Cristi Turcu, who lives in the area, questioned why Church Road was being resurfaced 'for the third time in six months' along a 'perfect road'.

Photos provided by Mr Turcu show highways crews and vehicles conducting work night and day.

When confronted with the question, a Reading Borough Council spokesperson explained that some roads in Caversham have recently been redone because surfacing works conducting last year 'failed'.

The spokesperson said: "A new section of Church Road which was not resurfaced last year, between the junctions with Church Street and St Annes Road, has been improved this week as part of our major roads programme.

"This programme will see 76 sections of major roads to be resurfaced through a £4.5 million investment over two years.

"A different section of Church Road, between the junctions with St Anne’s Road and Woodrow Court, was resurfaced last year.

"The council has resurfaced around 700 roads since 2020.

"A small number of those resurfaced by our contractor in late 2023 – including Bridge Street and Church Street, and the junction where they meet Church Road - regrettably failed as they were resurfaced by the contractor in particularly wet weather.

"It was wholly a contractor’s decision to resurface in wet conditions and they rectified the surfaces, at no cost to council, in April this year to ensure work was completed to the standards we expect to be delivered for residents."

The work at the junction of Church Road and St Annes Road has been completed.

The spokesperson added that since 2020, the council has completed a three year, £9 million investment in road improvements, begun an additional resurfacing programme for five years worth £8 million, and seen the number of residential roads classified as in ‘good’ condition rise from 35 to 80 per cent.
