A musical drama commissioned by Show Racism The Red Card will be coming to Reading in October.

The UK's leading anti-racism educational charity has announced the commissioning of a new musical drama which will be staged at South Street Studio on October 29.

Part of a UK-wide tour during Black History Month 2024, the production, titled Our Little Hour, is a collaboration with Live Wire Theatre.

The drama tells the inspiring story of pioneering black footballer Walter Tull.

Award-winning playwright Dougie Blaxland and celebrated composer Chris Anthony are behind the project.

The work explores Mr Tull's life as the grandson of a Barbadian slave. Mr Tull was orphaned at eight, and rose to prominence against all odds.

He was the first black footballer to play at the highest level of the domestic game in the UK.

He achieved another historic breakthrough as the first man of his heritage to be commissioned as an officer in the British Army.

His life was tragically cut short in action just weeks before the end of the First World War.

Playwright Dougie Blaxland described Our Little Hour as: "A celebration of the life of an extraordinary man whose pioneering spirit continues to inspire the campaign for justice and equality.

"It is also deeply fitting that the production which will be staged throughout Black History Month honours the memory of one of the most significant figures in British sporting and military history."

Combining drama with original music, Our Little Hour follows the success of Mr Blaxland's last musical drama, On The Ropes, which had a sell-out run at The Park Theatre, London, last year.

Paul Kearns, director of operations at Show Racism The Red Card, said: "This production tells a really important story which will help to reinforce the work that we are doing to combat racism by engaging new audiences in a celebration of Walter Tull’s pioneering contribution to British society."

Our Little Hour will be staged at South Street Studio, Reading, on October 29 at 7.30pm.
