Lightning strikes have destroyed several trees in Reading over the weekend, with council workers called out to clear debris from residential roads.

Thunder and lightning hit the town at around 1am on Sunday morning.

Residents in Reading posting on social media said other lightning strikes had set off car alarms and hit telephone poles.

Posting on social media, one resident said they heard "insane rumbling" with the lightning sounds like it has struck the ground nearby.

The storm saw a lightning strike reduce a 30-ft tall tree to broken branches and splintered wood in Cintra Park.

A spokesperson from Reading Borough Council said that two trees had been reported as being hit by lightning over the weekend.

The spokesperson said: "A team was called out to the stricken tree in Cintra Park on Sunday morning to remove debris from the road and footpath to make them safe and clear. The team will be returning to clear the rest of the tree shortly.

"A privately owned tree close to Parkside Road was also struck by lightning and partly fell into the road and footpath, which was cleared by the team."
