All of the snakes that have been spotted in Berkshire - including in gardens - have been mapped by experts to try to better understand the creatures.

Typically found in long grassed areas or commons, snakes have for long had the reputation of being mean and deadly creatures.

The UK is home to many harmless snakes, but there is one venomous species that found in the UK - the adder.

We have pieced together all of the snakes, including adders, grass snakes and smooth snakes, and mapped them the whole of the UK, including multiple areas in the South East.

Here - you can see if any of the popular walking routes or nature reserves you use have had sightings of snakes.

Sightings in County Berkshire

In February 2023, two Adders were reportedly found near Greenham in their adult life stage.

Known as the UK's only venomous snake, Adders can grow to around 70cm with a distinctive zigzag pattern down their back, red eyes and a vertical pupil.

Although most snakes found are alive, some reptiles across Berkshire have been reported as dead when discovered.

This includes an Adder found near Reading on February 14, 2023.

2024 sightings include Adders in Reading, Wokingham, and Maidenhead.

Grass snakes were discovered in gardens across West Berkshire and Slough by members of the public. These snakes are often found in the UK. They can be recognised by their olive green colour skin with large eyes and round pupils.

Berkshire Reptile Rescue come across dozens of snakes a year when they are brought in by members of the public.

They reported that on Sunday, September 8,  a Cali king snake was found on Snelmore Common by a lady walking her dog.

It was collected and delivered to the rescue.

The Cali King Snake are considered harmless to humans, but if handled it is common for this species to bite.
