Motorbikers will be given back access to a new controversial Reading bus lane after their usage was suddenly revoked.

A biker raised the alarm that motorcycles were briefly allowed to use the inbound London Road bus lane which went live on Thursday, August 15.

But overnight, access was revoked in a change to the roadsigns showing which vehicles are allowed to use the bus lane.

A photo provided by the biker showed a sign indicating motorcycles could use the lane, which was then covered by a blue sticker at a later time. The change was made by Reading Borough Council, as a legal order dictating which vehicles could use the bus lane had not been issued yet.

But motorbikes are set to be allowed to use the bus lane thanks to an experimental traffic regulation order that will come into effect on Friday, September 13.

Access to the bus lane will be granted on a trial basis, as agreed by the council's traffic management sub-committee in January.

A spokesperson for the council said: The experimental traffic regulation order to allow motorcycles to access the bus lane will come into effect from Friday and will be reviewed at a later date.

"Signage will be updated to show that motorcycles may use the new London Road bus lane, along with buses, licensed Hackney Carriages and bicycles."

The experimental traffic regulation order is in place on a temporary basis and is subject to a future review.
