Train passengers travelling through Newbury are warned to expect disruption - including bus replacement services - until December due to rail works.

Network Rail is planning flood alleviation works and track replacements on the Newbury routes until December 12.

The first period of works will impact train services between Newbury and Westbury from Tuesday 17 to Thursday 19 September.

The works mean that trains will run between London Paddington and the South West using an alternative route via Swindon, resulting in longer journey times.

Trains will still run between London Paddington and Newbury - including Reading - but replacement buses will operate between Newbury and Bedwyn, and between Pewsey and Swindon.

There will be a reduced train service between Westbury and Swindon with replacement buses operating between Westbury and Chippenham instead.

Further disruption is expected on the lines between Theale and Westbury in November from Monday 11 to Thursday 14.

And then in December works will mean changes to services between Newbury and Westbury in December from Tuesday 10 to Thursday 12.

Tom Butler, GWR Station Manager for the Kennet & Thames Valley area, said: “This improvement work forms part of an ongoing programme of maintenance, helping to ensure we can continue to provide consistent and reliable services.

“It’s important that customers note these alternative travel arrangements will make their normal journey times a little longer, so please do check before you travel.”
