Trains between Reading and London Paddington were left "chaos" on Saturday evening according to commuters - as lines were closed due to a trespassing incident.

Both Great Western Railway and National Rail warned they expected major disruption to last until "the end of the day."

In a statement, a spokesperson for National Rail said: "The emergency services have safely completed their work at London Paddington and lines have now reopened.

"Trains running to / from / through this station may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or revised whilst service recovers.

"Network Rail have now restored the electric power supply allowing trains to run again.

"Service between Greenford and West Ealing is still currently suspended until approximately 21:45."

One commuter who contacted The Reading Chronicle said London Paddington Station was in "chaos" from around 6pm to 9pm.

They said: "It's insane - all the screen are blank here and apparently it will be two hours before normal trains start back up."

National Rail said that Great Western Railway were revised to start or terminate at Reading.

Ticket holders affected by the disruption may use their tickets on South Western Railway service between Reading or Windsor & Eton Riverside and London Waterloo.

Tickets will also be accepted on Chiltern Railway between Oxford and London Marylebone.

London Underground is also accepting tickets for journeys along "any reasonable route."

British Transport Police have been contacted for further information about the trespassing incident.
