A well-known Windsor pub is set for massive refurb after winning the ‘Best Community Pub’ at The Great British Pub Awards 2024.
The Swan in Clewer Village, Windsor, attended the prestigious award ceremony of what is described as ‘the Oscars of the pub world’ on Tuesday, September 17 in Manchester.
As it turns a new page in its history, the £5,000 grand prize will be put towards a significant ongoing refurbishment.
Pubs from across the country compete for these accolades in the annual awards, making the achievement all the more noteworthy.
The victorious moment was live-streamed to The Swan, sparking an evening of jubilant celebration among the local patrons.
General Manager, Micky Foden-Andrews, accepted the award on behalf of The Swan.
He said: "First and foremost, a huge thank you to The Swan team and all of our supporters.
"A community pub is nothing without its community!
"The energy and backing you have brought to The Swan over the past 5 years to bring it back to life has been astonishing."
The award is more than a decorative trophy - it also comes with a cash prize of £5000.
This amount will be channelled into the ongoing refurbishment of the pub.
More importantly, it recognises the combined efforts of everyone who has been a part of The Swan's story over recent years.
It's proof positive of the power of community and will, hopefully, inspire other local establishments.
The significance of the award has not been lost on Micky, who humorously likened it to the Oscars of pubs.
Along with his wife, Jess, they've been proudly representing The Swan's resurgence.
For over two decades, The Great British Pub Awards have been organised by The Morning Advertiser, the leading UK publication for the pub industry.
The Swan's achievement underscores their relentless effort over the years to bring the pub back to vibrant life.
Micky continued: "This can be seen in the dedication of our volunteers and the huge array of different clubs, activities and events we hold here, as well as our unique partnership with The Green Room College."
The award's ripple effect is expected to attract more visitors.
Micky later added: "We hope to see you soon at The Swan, where everyone is welcome."
Interestingly, The Swan's story is not just about winning prestigious accolades.
Its revival is built on community involvement, from the dedication of volunteers to the variety of activities and events held there.
In conclusion, The Great British Pub Awards 2024 has rewarded The Swan's rejuvenation efforts with the 'Best Community Pub' title, a cash prize and the hope of a brighter future.
As Micky flagged, "Hopefully it will encourage more people to come down to The Swan to see what it is all about."
