MORE road markings are planned National Highways has confirmed after complaints over the set up of M4 roadworks near Junction 12.
Drivers have been complaining of too many near-misses and 'an accident waiting to happen' at the roadworks set up at Junction 12's M4 roundabout.
The highways authority is currently carrying out what it says are essential works to replace expansion joints, carry out waterproofing and resurfacing on bridges over the motorway.
The works have closed a lane on the approach to the M4 roundabout from Theale - and drivers have reported that it is causing havoc due to poor signage.
One Theale resident who contacted The Reading Chronicle said the issue is with the closure of a filter lane that previously took traffic from the northbound A4/Bath Road on to the M4 westbound or straight over.
No the lane is only filtering traffic on to the M4, leading to many drivers cutting into the middle lane to continue over the roundabout - ignoring road markings.
Following several complaints to highways officials, and many more online, National Highways has added more signs in the approach to the junction roadworks.
A National Highways spokesperson said: "Our job is to keep the country moving and we plan all our closures extremely carefully to minimise disruption. We welcome feedback and have taken further action to assist those travelling thought our roadworks near to the M4, Theale.
"Overnight our workforce placed additional signs to both sides of the A4 on the approach to the interchange back to the roundabout with Hoad Way. We will also be adding temporary road markings and will continue to monitor the situation.”
Phase one of the roadworks has seen the west side of the junction reduced to two lanes running 24/7 from Monday, September 16, to Friday, October 11.
The next phase of works include overnight closures in place on the west side of the junction from 8pm to 6am from October 21 to November 23, affecting Monday to Saturday each week.
