An underpass used by walkers and cyclists in the Katesgrove area of Reading is due for a spruce up as £100,000 of funding for improvements has been secured.

The passage under the IDR in Katesgrove serves as a useful route for pedestrians and cyclists to get to and from Katesgrove and the town centre.

But the condition of the passage has deteriorated, with a light spotted being broken and public artwork being defaced by graffiti.

The underpass is now due to a project for improvements following a successful bid for funding from the Katesgrove Community Association and Green councillors to Reading Borough Council.

Councillor Louise Keane (Green, Katesgrove) said: “This underpass suffers from graffiti, broken lights and antisocial behaviour.

“Together we have secured £100,000 from the council to improve this grot spot.”

Christine Lalley from Katesgrove Community Association (KCA) said: "The underpass is very well used by pedestrians and cyclists.

"The mural on the sides has artwork which was done by local children but it has not stood the test of time and has been defaced by graffiti.

"KCA has worked hard to get funding to revamp the Underpass, we have started discussions with Reading Borough Council and look forward to progressing this project.

"We want to make this a more welcoming entrance to Katesgrove. "

Funding for the project comes from Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) which is paid to the council by developers to pay for infrastructure and council services.
