A vigil has been held in Reading after the killing of a female doctor in India prompted international outrage.

A demonstration was held at Forbury Gardens calling for justice in her memory on Saturday, September 28.

People held signs saying #WeWantJustice and "let us all unite in demand for justice". It was attended by two of Reading's MPs.

Matt Rodda, the Labour MP for Reading Central said: "I was horrified to learn of the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata, India.

"I showed my support at a vigil in Forbury Gardens.

"This is a stark reminder of the scourge of violence against women and girls worldwide, and further highlights why the new government is taking this type of crime so seriously here in our country."

A spokesperson for Yuan Yang, the Labour MP for Earley and Woodley said: "On Saturday, Yuan attended a vigil in Reading alongside Mr Rodda MP and members of the local community.

"They called for justice for the victim of the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor seen in Kolkata.

"Yuan spoke on the importance of working together to end violence against women worldwide."

While no one has been convicted of the crime yet, three arrests have been made.

It is understood that court proceedings are active.
