Long-time residents of Reading have been remembering a popular food stop that shut its doors a decade ago.

Nino's Restaurante and Pizzeria was situated in Market Place but also had an eatery in Caversham.

After the closure of both restaurants, Nino's in Pangbourne opened and is run by the previous owner's son.

Murray Leese recently posted on Facebook a photograph of the beloved restaurant along with the following caption.

He said: "Anyone remember NINO'S Italian food restaurant closed in 2014 after 30 years of trading.."

Over one hundred commenters flooded to the post to share their happy memories of Nino's.

One person wrote "Nino’s was originally in Prospect Street Caversham until 1984 when Ossi and his brother Issan bought it and became the wonderful Italian restaurant Quattro that is still there now."

Another person responded "Now in Pangbourne serving great food," with a second commenter replying "Yes, and they have a Deli and in the summer they had a coffee/gelato van down by the river. Great food and excellent service."

A further person said, "It was an excellent restaurant, superb food, and service, on one occasion it was my wife’s Birthday and Mr Nino gathered all the staff around the table and sang happy birthday to her with Mr Nino himself addressing my wife as dear Mama."

A whole host of other locals came through to share their experiences at the restaurant, some expressing that they had actually worked at the various locations.

One person wrote "Worked at Ninos Market Place, Ninos 2 in Caversham and the Wine bar in the 80s. Great times," and another person responded "I worked there too, in 80/81, washing up for my Saturday job! Lots of shenanigans went on in that kitchen."

A second person said, "I remember Nino when he and his wife and two children lived on the corner of Tavistock Road in reading we lived at 58 very nice people."

A further person wrote "My brother was a great friend of Nino. Had some great times in Nino's wine bar in Duke Street!"

However, some people gave the Italian a less than glowing review, with a few people questioning the quality of the food.

One person said "My mum and aunt (Italian) knew the owner but were very scathing about the food, saying it was ‘Italian food made to please English people’ i.e. not authentic.

"It was very popular so I don’t think Nino cared either way! (And I guess the same could be said of Indian and Chinese but we love it!)"
