Speed limits in a small West Berkshire village will be undergoing a change following a proposal presented by members of the community and local councillors in 2023.

The pilot scheme will see multiple speed limits across the town reduce from 30mph to 20mph on most residential roads.

The new scheme began on October 11, 2024 and will also include three main roads changing their speed limits from either 40mph or the national speed limit to 30mph.

If successful, this may determine whether it should be extended to other villages and residential areas across Reading and West Berkshire in the coming years.

Cllr Stuart Gourley, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Highways, commented: “This pilot scheme is an important milestone in our ongoing efforts to improve our highways, road safety and enhance the quality of life for our residents.

“By reducing speed limits in Theale, we are addressing local concerns, making our roads safer, and supporting the Council’s long-term commitment to creating safer, more sustainable communities across West Berkshire.”

Petitions raised by Cllr Alan Macro, ward member for Theale were signed by hundreds of residents in regards to the speed limit reduction in the village after receiving complaints.

He said: “I am very pleased that these petitions have now resulted in the introduction of 20MPH limits covering the main residential area of Theale and a 30MPH limit in The Green.

“These limits will make it much safer for pedestrians walking along the many narrow pavements in the village and should encourage more people to walk or cycle to the shops and schools.”
