As TGI Fridays restaurants across the country close, The Reading Chronicle's review of the town's branch became one our most read stories this weekend - but what do other visitors think about the troubled brand?

Last Monday, the chain announced the immediate closure of 35 restaurants across the UK - including its Bracknell branch - with 1,000 jobs made redundant after collapsing into administration.

But a deal secured with Breal Capital and Calveton UK means that 51 restaurants will remain open for the foreseeable future - including the restaurant in the Reading Station Shopping Park.

The announcement prompted our review of the branch, which was full of wonderful staff - but lacklustre food.

But what have other visitors made of the offering along Caversham Road?

According to the review site TripAdvisor, the restaurant has received 939 reviews that have left it ranked as the 87th best restaurant in Reading out of 489 listings.

The restaurant has received 344 five-star ratings, 161 four-star reviews, and 131 three-star submissions - as well as 115-two star and 188-one star reviews.

Attentive service, underwhelming food is how the site's AI system summarises the experience at TGI Fridays Reading.

Among the five-star 'Excellent' reviews, one user who posted this month said: "We had an amazing experience, great food, and Ruby was an awesome waitress, she was so friendly and gave us an amazing service, credit to TGI’s."

A similar enthusiastic review the month before said: "Katheryn was a fantastic bar tender, recommending cocktails and shots. The cocktails were yummy! Chantel was also great!"

Among the less favourable ratings, users have complained about the costs of the food and occasionally slow service.

One user - who gave the venue two stars last month - said: "I’ve not visited a TGI Fridays in a long time, when did it get sooo expensive!

"It’s always been on the pricer side but how do they expect family’s to afford their prices, especially with a cost of living crises.

"The menu is very limited, the portions are small and even though it was lunchtime, it used to be really busy on a Saturday afternoon, there was barely anyone in there, which was probably a good job as the service was slow with the few tables they did have.

"The food didn’t come out hot, the coke was flat and the 3 cokes, 2 tiny plates of nachos and 5 little chicken fingers cost nearly £50! Needless to say we won’t be going back!"

Meanwhile a one-star review in March claimed that "the majority" of their order was cold - after the wrong order had been taken and delivered.

The reviewer said: "It’s pretty clear why we were the only customers in the restaurant and why we will never go back."
