A school in Reading has been left in "shock and mourning" after the death of a pupil, according to a spokesperson from the school.

Oakbank Secondary School, in Hyde End Lane, informed pupils and parents of the pupil's death earlier this week.

In a statement, a spokesperson from the school said that counsellors were supporting staff and students.

The spokesperson for the school said: “It is with great sadness and grief that we have announced the tragic news of the death of one of our students; as a school community, we are in shock and mourning.

“Our hearts go out to the family and we would urge everyone to respect their privacy.

“In order to make sure that our staff and students are well supported as they come to terms with their grief, we have had a number of counsellors and other support teams onsite for them to talk to.

“We have also provided Oakbank families with details of the services and organisations that can offer immediate counselling and support.

“We would like to thank the whole school community for the kindness and support shown at this difficult time.”

Oakbank Secondary School opened in 2012 on the former site of Ryeish Green School, which was closed in 2010 due a fall in pupil numbers, according to Wokingham Borough Council.

The school is part of an academy trust, Anthem Schools Trust, which runs five secondary schools and 11 primary schools.

The school had been the subject of a BBC investigation in June of this year, over concerns about staff turnover and the number of pupil suspensions.
