Reading is among the UK's most mispronounced place names.
Barratt London analysed Google search data, revealing that Reading was the 21st most searched for pronunciation help, with over 3,000 searches annually.
Edinburgh topped the list, generating 230,400 annual searches for pronunciation help.
Following closely were Worcester and Marylebone, with 158,400 and 93,600 searches respectively.
The list highlighted 26 locations across the UK, each accruing more than 1,000 searches for pronunciation help every year.
Other notable mentions included Bicester, Worcestershire, Leicester, the River Thames, and Southwark, all of which regularly confuse visitors.
The study claimed that the English language is known for 'having some of the most nonsensical pronunciations on the planet.'
The findings underline the complexities of English pronunciation, where many words and names defy straightforward phonetic interpretation.
This means they are not pronounced the way they are spelled, and that 'from the Scottish capital to the River Thames, these are the UK place names visitors are asking Google for help saying.'
Outside of the UK, the research found that the Spanish island of Ibiza was the most difficult place names outside if the UK.
Also making the top five is Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, the Icelandic capital, Reykjavík, Thailand’s biggest island, Phuket, and the Hungarian capital of Budapest.
