An athlete who died during a triathlon event in Spain is believed to be from Reading, the nationals have reported.

Mark Stokes, a reported engineering expert and consultant based in the town, was taking part in the Grand Final of the World Triathlon Series in Torremolinos, Costa Del Sol last week.

The 57-year-old was one of two athletes to lose their lives during the event.

It has been reported that the incident occurred during the final stage of the triathlon on Thursday afternoon (October 17) after the athlete had completed the swimming and cycling portions. 

Tributes have since poured in for Mr Stokes online.

Mike Nash, chairman of Tri20 Club based in Reading, wrote: “It is with great sadness that I have to announce that Mark Stokes, a dear friend and member of the Tri2O Triathlon Club passed away while competing in the recent Triathlon World Championships in Torremolinos Spain.

“Mark was a kind and generous gentleman and athlete who was an integral and very supportive member of our Triathlon Club.

“Mark's contribution to Triathlon and our club will not be forgotten and whilst we are currently mourning the loss of our dear friend we will in due course find a suitable way to honor his memory.

“In the meantime, our heartfelt sympathy and thoughts are with Mark's family and friends. RIP Mark.”
