A Berkshire waterway is being polluted by sewage following over 150 hours of overflowing discharge.

The storm overflow at Mortimer (Foudry Brook) in West Berkshire started at 6:30pm on Wednesday, October 16.

Thames Water has stated that the overflow means that there could be sewage in this section of the watercourse.

The water company that spreads across the majority of Thames Valley and London has announced that they are spending £1.12 billion in their sewage treatment works.

This includes £650 million to improve resilience and provide extra capacity at many of our sites and  £885 million for reducing storm overflow.

Works have been planned to improve the STW at Mortimer over the next few years.

Thames Water said: “An upgrade is planned for Mortimer STW. This will improve its ability to treat the volumes of incoming sewage, reducing the need for untreated discharges in wet weather.

"The scheme is due to complete before the end of 2024. We expect this location to meet all Government targets for storm overflows by 2030.”
