A wheelchair user has come forward to express his annoyance at a retail giant who has a Reading store in the town centre. 

Tony Batten, 64, from Pangbourne, said that despite flagging to the staff and chief executive of Marks and Spencers that their lift has been out of order for months, nothing has been done to fix it. 

"I quite often use the lift to go to the first floor," Mr Batten said. "But throughout the summer it was out of order.

"It's been out of action for at least six weeks lately, and on and off again throughout the summer period. The lift needs replacing as it has been there for years."

Mr Batten actually worked at the store himself in the late 90s and remembers when they installed the lift.

"Retail isn't what it used to be, but M&S is still making millions in profit. Why won't they commit to sorting this problem out?" Mr Batten said. 

There is a second lift in the store, but Mr Batten relayed that he wasn't actually told until this week Monday, October 21 that it actually existed. 

The other lift is a staff lift that is situated next to a store room. The doors on Thursday, October 24 were propped open but it is clear that a fob would be needed to gain entrance.

Mr Batten relayed that he has written three times to the chief executive of Marks and Spencers to point out the issue, but nothing has come of it. 

"Last time I had an email saying that they were not actually considering doing anything about the lift at the moment," he said. 

"If you speak to anyone in the store, nobody seems to be interested. Life has changed from what it used to be."

Mr Batten actually asked the chief exec to meet him in the Reading store so they could look at the issue together, but he did not get a response.

"I know I'm not alone in this situation. Several of my friends who live locally that have either walking frames or wheelchairs are finding it very frustrating," he continued. 

Mr Batten also said that despite being told he could use the service lift it was actually out of order last Monday and has been so on multiple occasions. 

An M&S Spokesperson said: “Our store in Reading has two lifts to ensure there is always an accessible route for customers to use all floors, and our colleagues are on hand to help customers with their shopping.”
