Officials from the West Berkshire Campaign for Real Ale have said that they are “disgusted” after plans were put forward to demolish a historic pub.
The Rising Sun, located on Ermin Street in Newbury was once a bustling business in Stockcross before being closed for good in 2017.
Despite being listed for sale following its closure, the abandoned pub still sits empty waiting on the fate of its future.
A planning application put forward on August 1, 2024 shows that the current owners wish to demolish the 991 sq metre property and build three dwellings within the quarter acre of land.
After being validated by West Berkshire Council, the consultation will take place on Wednesday, November 13.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, October 24, members of CAMRA in West Berkshire hit out at this decision.
They stated that the decision to ‘not incorporate the existing building’ was disgusting.
When the Rising Sun closed its doors, locals living in the area set up a website called ‘Save the Rising Sun at Stockcross’ to try and keep the business going.
At the time, councillor Keith Phillips said that the Rising Sun remains a "sad reminder" of all of the pubs lost in the small village of Stockcross.
The application has proposed two three-bedroom homes and one four-bedroom home with eight parking spaces.
