A much-loved independent cheese and drinks that caused dismay when it closed in Reading town centre is being taken over by an Italian eatery.

The Grumpy Goat was a Reading institution selling craft cheeses and alcohol.

Initially set up in the Harris Arcade, the business moved to larger premises in Union Street, affectionately known as 'Smelly Alley' in 2020.

But The Grumpy Goat closed in October 2023 after a decade in business following an apparent dispute with their landlord.

Now the unit they previously occupied in Smelly Alley is set to be taken over 'Zi Tore' Italian street food.

Posters show that pizza, waffles, pastries and coffee will be sold there, giving future customers an impression of what to expect.

No licensing application was visible in the window.

Zi Tore would require a premises licence to sell alcohol at any time of the day and food and refreshments between 11pm to 5am overnight.

The business was incorporated in May with three directors: Ahmad Samim Ibrahimkhil, Paolo Lanzetta and Khuram Shehzad.

The unit Zi Tore will occupy, 7 Union Street, was previously the home of the Quantum Cafe, which opened in 1999 as an internet cafe.

As well as drinks and cakes, Quantum held gaming parties and internet services before closing in October 2020, clearing the way for The Grumpy Goat to take over.
