An expert in retail has spoken out amid claims that Reading is losing its independent scene.
The director at Hicks Baker, which is an independent firm of retail letting agents, Fiona Brownfoot said that despite the public thinking that many independent shops and eateries have recently closed, this is untrue.
"If I look back over the last five years and consider the lettings we have had, in fact, this year we had three independents close, and last year we had four," Ms Brownfoot said.
She went on to say that this year's independent closures included a nail salon on West Street, a noodle place on Queen Victoria Street, and The Grumpy Goat.
The previous year saw Wolf shutting down along with Brew Cafe, Sonning Flowers relocated, and Barista and Beyond also closed down.
"Actually, when you bear in mind that we have 593 units in the town the closures are incredibly low. It is not the case that we have seen lots of independents closing," she continued.
"Independent businesses do want to open in Reading, and I really admire them as it is so brave.
"Opening a new store is brave for anyone whether you are an established operator or your new. Hats off to them and they should be admired."
Ms Brownfoot went on to say that she gets angry when she sees people on social media tearing down new independents who have just arrived in the town.
She said she is sick of seeing people on platforms like Facebook 'condemning' independents and expressing that they won't last long in Reading.
"We need to support these people," Ms Brownfoot said. "How about a little bit of support instead of condemning them?
"People shouldn't condemn people who are entrepreneurial enough to open a new venture. It is such a brilliant thing to do."
She went on to say that Hicks Baker has recently seen one independent open in the Harris Arcade called Ted's Curiosities which is an assignment store.
"They started off life online, and did very well so decided to take a store. That's just brilliant! I love to see that," Ms Brownfoot said.
"That's so good. One should applaud and support these independents instead of condemning them."
