Police have been searching for knives in a Reading park as part of a force-wide operation to crack down on knife crime.

This week saw the beginning of Operation Sceptre, an annual week-long operation to highlight actions undertaken by police forces across the country as they work to take dangerous weapons off the street.

Police officers in Reading have been joining the operation with knife sweeps in a park off Northumberland Avenue, in Whitley.

A spokesperson from Thames Valley Police said: "PCSOs have been conducting a knife sweep of John Rabsons recreation ground. We're pleased to say nothing has been found."

Police in Bracknell have also been carrying out knife sweeps across the area as part of the operation.

In May during another week of Operation Sceptre, nearly 400 knives were handed in to Thames Valley Police.

Officers made 76 knife-related arrests, and officers carried out 148 stop searches during the week of action.
