Great Western Railway will not be running any trains between Reading and Paddington this Sunday - making it the fifth weekend in a row that the line has faced significant disruption.

Great Western Railway (GWR) said the cancellations was to allow for works on the new HS2 station at Old Oak Common in London, as well as Network Rail improvements to track, signals and overhead wires.

Most long-distance services will start from or terminate at Reading, where customers will be able to pick up TfL Elizabeth line trains to Ealing Broadway and then change for London Underground services into central London.

Customers have been advised to travel on Saturday or Monday instead if possible.

GWR said services between Reading and Oxford and the North Cotswolds could also see late-notice changes on Sunday morning.

It will be the fifth Sunday in a row that the line has faced significant disruption.

Last weekend saw 'a significant reduced service' on the line between London and Bristol Temple Meads on Remembrance Sunday - when tens of thousands of people looked to travel to the capital for memorial events.

GWR warned customers to ‘only travel if absolutely necessary’ between London Paddington, Bristol, and South Wales the previous Sunday, November 3.

Train crew availability led to cancellations and disruptions on October 20 and 27.

It's led to some passengers branding the train company as 'Great Western Failway'.

Posting on social media regarding the recent disruption, one person commented: "I experience nothing but delays on that company. There hasn’t been one time I’ve travelled in the last 6 months where I’ve not experienced a delay or cancellation of some sort."

Another added: "I use GWR several times every week, but I won't go near it on a Sunday anymore as they just cannot be relied upon to deliver the service."

"When there’s a Sunday in the weekend you be be as sure as hell that GWR will not be running a rail service," another passenger posted online.

GWR Operations Director, Richard Rowland, said this weekend's works were part of a 'really complex operation'.

He said: “We have worked hard to make sure people get to where they want to go. We will run an hourly service from the south-west of England – Cornwall and Devon – and an hourly service from South Wales, which will go into Euston.

“We will then have several trains which will terminate at Reading, and people can change there. We will also have trains to Ealing Broadway for those making more local journeys. They will be able to change on to the London Underground and into London that way.

“Trains on the Sunday will, however, be significantly reduced and we would urge people to travel on the day before or the day after, freeing up space for those who have to travel on the Sunday. We have altered tickets to allow people to do so.”
