A military convoy believed to be carrying nuclear warheads has been spotted moving along a road in Reading.
The convoy was made up a large police presence and umarked trucks - typical of nuclear material transportation operations - moving along the Bath Road towards the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Burghfield.
Reports from locals and bystanders suggest that the convoy consisted of several large, unmarked trucks, typical of those used for transporting nuclear materials, accompanied by various support vehicles.
The Ministry of Defence has not issued a statement on the convoy.
The movement of nuclear warheads is a routine, yet secretive, operation in the UK, with convoys regularly moving between AWE sites for maintenance and deployment purposes.
AWE Burghfield is one of the UK's key sites for the assembly and maintenance of nuclear weapons.
A former munitions factory, AWE Burghfield is a 225-acre site where warheads are assembled and maintained while in service, and decommissioned when out of service.
Berkshire is also home to AWE Aldermaston, which covers a site of approximately 750 acres.
Once a wartime airfield, today Aldermaston is a centre of advanced research, design and manufacturing facilities.
In 2020, the site's mysterious lightning siren sent some residents into a panic.
