Since the Lyndhurst reopened its doors under new management, I have been looking forward to seeing if their Sunday lunch is anything to write home about.
The pub in central Reading has reopened its kitchen after an £8,000 refit, with the venue's new manager promising to turn the business into a thriving community pub.
It marks the second time so far this year that The Lyndhurst Bar and Kitchen, situated on Queen's Road, has changed hands.
In May, Rebecca Blissett took over from the previous long-standing landlords - but the pub's new direction faced backlash from regulars, with concerns that the pub was becoming more like a sports bar and that the food had gone downhill.
To see if this harsh review also applies to the new management, me and some friends decided to check out their Sunday roast.
The menu boasted four options which at this point in the season were turkey, pork, beef, and chestnut roast.
As I regularly cook both beef and chicken (close enough to turkey) at home, I decided to go with the pork. Two others went for turkey and one of us opted for the nut roast.
I can safely say that I was pleasantly surprised. For £15, the portions were particularly generous with large servings of sides and vegetables.
Our waiter even provided us with a full jug of gravy, not a small boat like many places do. We were also lavished with copious amounts of cranberry sauce, horseradish, mint sauce, and apple sauce.
The meat was served with crispy roast potatoes, sweet parsnips, a perfect Yorkshire pud, a well-seasoned stuffing ball, and (in my case) some crackling.
The staff then provided us with two generous servings of cauliflower cheese, a heaped bowl of braised cabbage and suede mash, and another dish piled high with carrots and broccoli.
The meat was well cooked and I'd struggle to find fault with anything else on the plate. I am also a huge fan of cauliflower cheese, and the Lyndhurst's take on it was pretty good.
By the time we had finished our plates, we were all absolutely stuffed. I would fervently say that the roast is really good value for money, and you definitely aren't left wanting.
I did have my eye on potentially trying one of their deserts which they change up regularly, all displayed on a blackboard at the back of the pub, but alas I could not manage another single morsel.
If you are looking to change up your regular Sunday lunch stop, I would thoroughly recommend the Lyndhurst. It was delightful.
Disclaimer: Me and the group I dined with paid for our meals entirely. This was not a gifted/paid-for review.
