Talented school children have been named winners of a creative sculpture competition.

Organised by Alupro and re3, the competition encouraged children across Bracknell Forest, Reading, and Wokingham to craft sculptures from clean, used aluminium foil.

The theme for this year was spring, curating the sculptures from clean, used aluminum foil.

Entries for the competition closed in April 19th, 2024.

The winners were Gaia Joseph from Park Lane School in Reading, Theo Randall from Whitegrove Primary in Bracknell, and Daisy Pollock from Winnersh Primary School in Wokingham.

Each winner received a £20 voucher, and their schools were given £100 in vouchers for books, supplies, and activities.

A group prize went to Geoffrey Field Infant School in Reading.

The competition was part of the ‘Fantastic Foil’ initiative, which aims to inspire 190,000 households across the three boroughs to recycle their foil and other aluminium packaging.

Tom Giddings, executive director at Alupro, said: "We were thoroughly impressed with the creativity and talent shown by each and every entry to the competition – it was a real pleasure to be involved in the judging process.

Cllr Karen Rowland, Chair of the re3 Joint Waste Disposal Board, said: "The ‘Fantastic Foil’ campaign for schools delivered with Alupro was a great success and we were pleased to receive almost 80 entries from local pupils and schools.

"We are thankful to everyone who has participated and hope it helped to raise awareness and educated about the importance of foil and aluminium packaging recycling.

"Previous surveys have found that children are often more in the know about recycling and help family members and caregivers to get it right at home, so extending the campaign to young people is a positive way to help drive recycling now and in the future."

The competition had nearly 80 entries from pupils and schools, all contributing to raising awareness about the importance of recycling.

Alpuro is a non-for-profit organisation, which has represented the UK's aluminium packaging industry for the last three decades.

The group works alongside local authorities to help 'meet, and exceed,' the recycling targets for aluminum packaging.
