Residents are hitting back on social media about the decision to create a bus lane on London Road following months of chaos.

In August, the left side of London Road was shut off for cars, as it became dedicated for bus journeys, in a move that has left traffic ‘appalling’ according to residents.

Reading Borough Council (RBC) introduced the change to the route along London Road to Sidmouth Street as part of a £26m investment in bus services across the town.

An original post by an Earley resident commented in a community group saying: “Whose idea was it to add a bus lane on London Road.

He should be put in prison for such a daft idea...It’s caused way more issues.”

Other voices chimed in, in agreement saying that the decision to create a bus lane on this stretch of road was ‘a mistake’.

Reading Borough Council has made a constant effort to encourage residents to use public transport by increasing bus lanes and making journeys shorter.

Another resident added: “All done to discourage cars coming into town but interestingly the busses can't access the new bus lanes either due to the congestion the council have created.”

“"They" think it will encourage you to use public transport, a ridiculous concept if you are non local.”

This change to one of Reading’s busiest routes has been compared to other decisions including the addition of a cycle lane near a Reading school.

“Along with that stupid cycle lane near Kendrick School, another waste of Council money, you never see any bikes on it, now just an empty road.”

For drivers making their way from the A3290 slip road into Reading, this route causes increasing congestion for both cars and buses.
