Thousands of people in Berkshire have signed a petition calling on the Labour government to hold a general election.

The last general election was held on Thursday, July 4 with Labour being elected to government for the first time in 14 years with 411 MPs and a 174-seat majority.

The petition was started by pub owner Michael Westwood, who lives in the West Midlands.

Mr Westwood wrote: "I would like there to be another General Election.

"I believe the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead up to the last election."

The government has been criticised for cutting access to the winter fuel payment to an estimated 10.7 million pensioners according to Age UK, and planned changes to inheritance tax have sparked a series of protests by farmers.

At the time of writing, a total of 36,695 people in Berkshire have signed the e-petition.

The constituency where the petition has been signed the most is Maidenhead,  which covers the eponymous town, surrounding villages and rural areas of Binfield, Warfield and Winkfield in the Bracknell Forest.

There, the petition has received 4,935 signatures. Joshua Reynolds is the Liberal Democrat MP for Maidenhead.

You can view how many people have signed in each of Berkshire's nine constituencies below:

Reading Central - 2,843

Reading West and Mid Berkshire - 4,144

Earley and Woodley - 3,733

Wokingham - 4,577

Newbury - 4,633

Bracknell - 4,642

Maidenhead - 4,935

Windsor - 4,794

The integrity of the signature figures has been put into question. According to national reports, thousands of people from overseas have signed the petition.

The petition is unlikely to make genuine headway, as Sir Kier Starmer, the Prime Minister, has rebuffed the request for a fresh election.

Asked about the petition on ITV’s This Morning programme, Sir Keir said: “Look, I remind myself that very many people didn’t vote Labour at the last election.

“I’m not surprised that many of them want a re-run. That isn’t how our system works.

“There will be plenty of people who didn’t want us in in the first place.

“So, what my focus is on is the decisions that I have to make every day.”
