Weekend round-up

NEWLY-PROMOTED Surbiton caused an upset on the opening day of the Investec Women's Premier Division as they beat Reading 4-0, writes Asim Farooqui.

Sarah Page gave them the early lead when she smashed home from open play and Chloe Strong latched on to a penalty corner to make it 2-0 after 53 minutes.

Reading, in their first game under new manager Steve Bayer, capitulated somewhat after that and Natalie Bell scored a penalty stroke two minutes from the end after the referee spotted a deliberate foul in front of goal. Surbiton's perfect start was completed in the final minute as Bethan Jenkins hit a fourth from a penalty corner.

Surbiton took full advantage of a Reading side who had only captain Kate Walsh and Helen Richardson out of their seven from the GB Olympic squad available to play.

DEFENDING champions Reading showed a ruthless streak in front of goal as they beat Hampstead and Westminster 7-3 in their first match of the Men's Hockey League Premier Division season.

Richard Mantell was a man in form for Reading, expertly putting away a hat-trick of penalty corners as his side ran out comfortable winners. It was an impressive performance from a Reading team with several new additions looking to retain their title.
