Knight was on trial at Watford last week after an unsuccessful spell at Colorado Rapids in America, with the Hornets yet to make a decision on whether they wish to sign the defender.
Steve Clarke has now expressed an interest to help solve the club's shortcomings in central defence, with only 20-year-old Jake Cooper as a fully fit back up to the first choice pairing of Alex Pearce and Michael Hector.
The 34-year-old is available on a free transfer and Clarke is keen to take a look at the ex-England international.
It is understood Knight is due to watch Royals in action at the Madejski Stadium tonight, against Brighton (8pm).
The vastly experienced defender has over 350 career appearances to his name, with the majority coming in the Premier League for Fulham, Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers.
