Defensively, Clement still has his work cut out for him. Reading have allowed 29 goals. If Reading can limit the number of goals they are shipping, there is no doubt they can move away from danger thanks to their scoring. Last season, Reading allowed 70 goals, yet Clement hasn’t improved the defence this term. Only one clean sheet has been recorded by the Royals. This is the team’s biggest problem, but it can be fixed.
Get results over next eight games
Of course, it seems like a no-brainer to say Reading must ‘get results’, but the next eight matches may be the make or break portion of the season. Reading will play three home and five away matches between November 24 and New Year’s Day. Clement has to get results. Twenty-four points will be up for grabs and if he can take at least half, Reading should be in good shape.
A change at the top
Clement has been in the Reading managerial role for less than a year. He kept the club up last term and had an offseason to get things in order. In 27 matches in charge of Reading, Clement has recorded a 25.9-win percentage. It hasn’t been great and rumours of former Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin taking over are making the rounds. Reading must make a harsh decision in the coming weeks and decide if Clement is the right man to continue in his current role.
Will Reading stay in the Championship? The answer is yes. The Royals have enough tools and there is still plenty of time to make the vital changes that can keep the team in the Championship for another season. Whether Clement is the man in charge or someone else, there is plenty of reason to believe Reading are destined for another year in the Championship.
