THE men’s Seniors’ Open was contested by 52 pairs at West Berks, and Ian Parfitt and Alan Fee of Hamptworth GC took first prize with 47 points.
Tony Athawes and his brother, Terry, of the home club, followed them home with 44 and beating Bob Fagg, of West Berks and Graham Bradley of Cotswolds on countback.
The same method also decided fourth and fifth placing with Ken McIntyre and Dave Palmer of Drayton Park with 43 points edging out Bryan Topliss and Colin Ledbury of Frilford Heath.
Peter Saunders and Alan McCann of Cotswold Edge won the prize for the best front nine with 23 points, while West Berks’ president, Gordon Munro, and partner Gordon Jolly of Burford had the best back nine with 22.
Simon De Angeli of Donnington Grove won the nearest-the-pin prize and Tony Athawes won the longest drive.
The captains’ charity day on Sunday was a thoroughly enjoyable event which was played in teams of four playing Am-Am with a shotgun start. The weather was bright and cheery and so was the scoring with the winning team comprising Rob Griffiths, Tom Wickstead and Kevin and Garry Dixon scoring a splendid 92 points.
Martin Rolls, Rob Graham, Patrick Wilmore and Rob Camden were runners-up with 89, while Simon Matton, Chris Ward and Johnny Corbridge together with Simon Matton’s guest, Martin Gibson from Dallas, Texas took third spot.
More than £1,000 was raised on the two days for Macmillan Cancer Trust.
Lyn Pell with 22 points won the final of the Harris Cup, a ladies’ competition in which nine-hole qualifying competitions are played throughout the year and 17 points are required to qualify for the final.
Mary Harwood took runners-up spot with 21 points, while Ola Adams was third with 20.
Ray Pardoe scored 37 points to win the midweek stableford, Pete Hill was second with 35 and Roger Gaskell on 34 points won a three-way tie with Bob Patten and Martin Anscombe to take third place.
Harwood won the ladies’ September stableford with 35 points, relegating Simone Diamond to second place on countback, while Carol Sparvell with 34 points beat Aileen Summers on countback to take third place.
Tina Mulford maintained a good run of form to win the ladies’ September medal with gross 96, nett 76.
Sian Soanes was second with nett 83 and Jane Brackenbury third with 84.
Mustapha Mzouri won the men’s Saturday stableford with 38 points, while Phil Clare scored 36 to take second place from Tony Atkins on countback.
Renee Wheeler and Tom McAuley are the 2019 winners of the Mixed Foursomes KO comp, winning against Brackenbury and Jason Kendal in the final.
West Berks seniors lost their 10-match unbeaten run with a 6-0 defeat at Sand Martins on Monday.
However, the men’s Saturday team beat Studley Wood 4½-1½ to make it a return of 10 wins and one half in 11 matches this year with just five fixtures remaining.
The vets team lost 5-1 at home to Bicester.
