THE final round of the Gillas Cup at West Berks was a close run thing as was the final placing of the overall winner of the three-round competition. Paul Barton with 42 points beat Bill Hancock on countback to win the final round, while Chris Ramsey took third place from Christy Whelehan and Paul Beake via the same method.
Just behind the leaders were Andrew Greaves, Dan Bowsher and Keith Wilkins in a three way-tie on 40 points.
Bowsher won the overall competition, adding to his best previous score of 42 in round one to yield an aggregate of 82.
He won by a single point from Ramsey who made a brave bid to retain the title he won last year, but came up just short.
Barton’s winning round in the final took him up the leader board into a three-way tie with Whelehan and Wilkins, with Barton taking third place on countback.
The 2019 ladies’ winter league has been delayed by the poor weather of late and finally got underway on when Jane Brackenbury got off to a flying start with 38 points. Tina Mulford took second spot with 36 points and Sandy Miller was third with 27.
Andy Grayson won a three-way tie on 38 points to take the men’s midweek stableford. Steve Daly and Liam Bint placed second and third respectively on countback.
Luke Prestoe and Dan Taylor won the Walsh Shield, the men’s foursomes knockout competition, while Chris Hunt and Bowsher won the Classic Trophy, the four-ball better ball competition.
