Midfielder Jess Fishlock MBE departed Reading FC last week after being recalled by parent club OL Reign ahead of the start of the NWSL season.
Fishlock will return to the United States after 22 appearances in all competitions for Kelly Chambers’ Women’s Super League side.
In a highlight spell with the Royals, Fishlock netted two goals, both coming in a December victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. The Welsh international also recorded three assists as she was nominated for the league’s Player of the Month for December.
While at Reading, Fishlock was able to play with five senior Welsh internationals in the Royals squad over her eight-month spell in Berkshire including captain Natasha Harding and midfield partner Angharad James.
In an interview with Reading FC, Fishlock praised the set-up at Reading but warned that consistency was key going forward for the women’s side.
Another key quote from the influential playmaker was for Reading FC fans to back the women’s side.
“The team needs you, it makes a huge difference, never underestimate the importance of your presence for the girls.”
“The women’s game is growing massively; it’s going to be everywhere whether you like it or not so you might as well get onboard and get down to Madejski!”
Fishlock was awarded an MBE in 2018 for her services to football and the LGBT community and again has been an influence off the pitch during her first spell back in the UK since 2012.
Wales most-capped player, who is currently on international duty, has been busy in her spare time supporting Llanrumney Hall and its community food bank in her native Wales as well as being vocal across social media on social issues.
The 34-year-old has been praised throughout the season by fans, colleagues, staff, and media for her professionalism and experience she has brought to a small Reading squad.
Chambers has been operating with one of the smallest squads in the division and the departure of Fishlock could cause a selection headache.
Youngsters Molly Childerhouse and Silvana Flores have been the midfield cover on the bench this season but both 18-year-olds are yet to make their senior debuts. A possible tactical and formation change maybe needed for the final four games.
Reading currently sit 7th in the WSL and face Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup Fourth Round next up on Sunday at the Madejski Stadium.
