Walking Rugby was celebrated at Maidenhead Rugby Football club on Wednesday 7th of June 2023 at a session co-organised by Reading RFC and supported by HRH The Princess of Wales.
Walking Rugby is a valuable part of the sport which increases accessibility and engagement through a non-contact version of the game.
Reading RFC established their Walking Rugby section established in 2015, which has grown to involve around 40 men and women, playing three times a week.
To support Maidenhead RFC’s aspirations to start their own Walking Rugby group, Reading sen some Walkers to an event run by Maidenhead.
To promote her charity interests, HRH The Princess of Wales joined the assembled players alongside rugby royalty in the form of England players Ugo Monye, Courtney Lawes, and Danny Care.
The Princess proved a worthy and agile player, taking part in a Walking Rugby Netball game, before punting a ball over the heads of the photographers.
Stuart Spindler, Reading RFC Chair, said “It was a delight to be able to share our passion and commitment for Walking Rugby with both our hosts and their truly special guests and I’m thrilled at the prospect of a match against the newly developed Maidenhead team.”
Paul Alexander, Walking Rugby Administrator, said “It was an honour as well as a measure of the hard work we have all put in to be invited to help Maidenhead develop their own team. Doing so in the presence of both national players and royalty made for a day that will stay with everyone for a very long time!”
