Tennis fanatics will be excited to hear that Wimbledon legend Tim Henman is due to switch on Pangbourne Tennis Club’s brand-new lights.
The former no. 1 player was also the first British man to reach the singles semifinals in Wimbledon since his predecessor Roger Taylor.
The ‘Lights On Ceremony’ will take place on Friday October 6 at the club itself, with the switch being flipped at 7pm. This is a big deal for the club, who have been actively raising funds since the start of summer to ‘light up’ their courts.
The club says that court lighting will make a huge difference in extending the range of opportunities for people to play. This could include allowing members who work late to still enjoy a game of tennis when it’s dark outside.
Over £30,000 has been raised via crowdfunding and the support of local businesses for the cost of the lights. Grants from Pangbourne Parish Council, The Greenham Trust, and Sport England have also allowed the club to install the lights.
Pangbourne Tennis Club serves the nearby Oxfordshire villages of Whitchurch on Thames, Whitchurch Hill and beyond, and attracts members from all over West Berkshire. Its junior membership is the largest in West Berkshire, with a number of teams entered into local leagues.
The club welcomes everyone, especially new members, to meet Tim and all current club members on October 6.
