Reading midfielder Ovie Ejaira has been given 'downtime' after a recent change in 'personal circumstance.'

The 26-year-old has not featured in a matchday squad for over a year and manager Ruben Selles has called his attitude and commitment into question during recent conversations with the media.

Formerly of Liverpool and Rangers, the attacking midfielder was an exciting acquisition in 2020 after impressing during two loan spells.

However, with less than 60 appearances to his name in almost five years it looks unlikely the midfielder will feature any time soon.

Speaking ahead of Saturday's trip to Wycombe Wanderers, Selles: "Right now, there has been a personal circumstance with him where we are giving him time out. He must be able to come back in those days and train with the Under-21s, but right now he has been taking some personal days.

"He has some individual situation, and he is coming in, getting his fitness and then will be able to train again some days. He is not fully with us at training."

Selles was pressed hard as to why the former England youth international is yet to feature, and the former Southampton boss made it very clear that he has not seen anything in Ejaria to suggest he is in the right frame of mind to play.

"The situation with him was a complicated one before I even arrived," he started. "What I got was a player who was first of all injured, and second of all didn’t show any commitment to the club. I have different personalities in the staff and players, the problem is not about managing one character or another character, the problem is that when you need people to show something, he needs to show commitment. It’s not as easy as ‘it doesn’t matter what he does, let him play’. We are making heroes of people who have not proved they can make a difference for us.

"I cannot do it if I don’t see anything. Nothing indicates to me that he can do that right now. Moments happen, and his best moments for the club were a long time ago. We can make lots of speculation on players, but the reality is that he has not shown anything that indicates he can play and compete for us."
