Reading exited the EFL Trophy on penalties to Brighton and Hove Albion Under-21s.
Here is an immediate reaction from manager Ruben Selles, who was serving a touchline ban and watching from the stands.
Selles on the defeat
"For the entire game, it was a promising evening. We were on top of the game and the couple of chances we conceded was because of our mistakes. We pressured, we won the ball high, had shots on target, and we had situations where we didn’t finish. In the penalties, we had a bad day and didn’t go through. We came here with intentions to win the game and put a good performance together. I think the performance was there, but unfortunately, we were not robust enough.
"Clarity today was not there. We had a lot of shots blocked or off-target. Sometimes it happens, but we need to continue working in midweek.
"We wanted to go through. We had a brilliant group stage and the game against Charlton was also good. We came today with the intention to win the game. We put a good team out to be competitive, and we were. When you arrive at penalties, these things happen.
Selles injury update
"Today was okay. We have a couple of players still recovering from the Christmas period, like Harvey Knibbs and Sam Smith, but I think they will be available for the weekend. Andy Yiadom has been training with the group, but it was a little bit early for him. The three of them will be available for the weekend.
Port Vale preview
"We are looking forward to it, but one game at a time. We tried to win, we didn’t get it and we’re disappointed. Tomorrow we have a day off and then we will prepare on Thursday and Friday."
